Entangled and woven
Hyundai Translocal Series: Entangled and Woven at the Whitworth. Beautifully curated, the exhibition brings together contemporary artists and historic textiles from Korea and India, creating thoughtful conversations around making, repair, labour, memory and the passing of knowledge through generations.
As someone whose own practice is rooted in hand weaving, embroidery, repair and the value of slow processes, it felt particularly meaningful to spend time with work that shares these concerns. Rather than presenting textiles simply as objects, the exhibition reveals them as living carriers of culture, history and human connection.
What resonated most was the emphasis on time. Time invested in learning a skill. Time spent making by hand. Time held within cloth itself. In a world that often prioritises speed and consumption, these works remind us that textiles can embody care, resilience and continuity.
Grateful to have experienced the exhibition at its opening, and encouraged by the growing conversations around the cultural significance of textiles within contemporary art.
